Why protection planning matters

Some of the most important work in financial planning happens long before it’s ever needed.

Protection planning is about preparing for life’s most difficult moments so that when the unexpected happens, families have one less thing to worry about.

The story of Graham, Nick’s best friend, is a powerful reminder of why this work matters. Graham’s courage, generosity, and devotion to his family continue to inspire the way we think about financial protection and the support we provide to clients.

Graham’s story

Graham was strong, determined, and endlessly generous – the sort of person who made friends wherever he went. He was a devoted father to his two daughters, a proud dog-dad to his spaniel, and a passionate runner who even took on ultramarathons.

When Graham was diagnosed with gastroesophageal cancer, he faced it in the same way he approached everything in life: head-on.

He completed four rounds of chemotherapy with remarkable resilience, keeping his sense of humour throughout. Following this, he underwent major surgery to remove his stomach – an enormous operation with a long and difficult recovery. True to character, Graham pushed through with determination and strength.

For a time, it felt like things were turning a corner.

But cancer can be relentless, and the following year it returned.

Fundraising efforts

Even while facing his own battle, Graham continued to think about helping others.

Running had always been his passion. Through fundraising and events – including plans to run the London Marathon – he raised more than £10,000 for cancer research, determined to make a difference for families facing the same circumstances.

Through every hospital stay and appointment, he remained a loving, steady presence for his daughters, showing them what true strength looks like.

His favourite phrase became:

It is what it is.

The difference financial protection made

When illness strikes, the emotional weight can be overwhelming. The last thing any family should face alongside that is financial uncertainty.

Because Graham and Denise had protection in place, their home and stability were never at risk. Their daughters could remain in familiar surroundings – their bedrooms, their school routines, and the community they knew.

Insurance could not change the diagnosis. But it meant the family could focus on time together, not financial fear.

Graham passed away in May 2024, just six weeks after receiving his terminal diagnosis. In that time, the family were able to focus on creating precious memories together without worrying about money.

Support after loss

Since Graham’s passing, Denise has continued to receive support from Nick as she navigates the financial decisions ahead.

Denise says:

Nick has been an absolute godsend, helping me assess my finances and make decisions for mine and my daughters’ futures.

He has helped me to understand finances in a way I didn’t before and honestly didn’t think I would be able to get my head around. Nick is professional, clear, and so kind. I could not recommend him highly enough.

Continuing Graham’s legacy

Graham believed deeply in helping others, and his legacy continues through the causes that supported him and his family during his illness.

10% of all Oakpath’s protection commission income is donated to charities including:

  • St Wilfrid’s Hospice, which cared for Graham during his final days
  • Cancer research charities that support families facing the disease.

Through these contributions, Graham’s spirit of generosity continues to help others when they need it most.
